Please feel free to drop in or schedule an appointment if you need a specific time. I am available to meet face to face or will gladly set up a virtual meeting if you prefer. I am typically in the office daily from 9-5, except when in class; please feel free to drop in.

Biography

I am honored to be a tenured faculty member here at Dalton State College, having been with the college since 2006 in a variety of capacities and since 2014 as a full-time member of the social work program. I have been privileged to work as a professional social worker for over thirty years, and I am licensed by the state of Georgia as an LCSW. My professional social work career began in Chicago, Illinois, where I worked with families impacted by the child welfare system and as a therapist for children, adolescents, and young adults. I have worked with individuals impacted by family violence, children and youth experiencing homelessness and mental health challenges, children and young people in the LGBTQ+ community, and adults impacted by AIDS and HIV. I have served in clinical and administrative positions in a variety of public and not-for-profit settings. My practice and scholarship/research interests include public policy (specifically poverty policy and gender equality), democratic engagement (voting is social work), and undergraduate student participation in community-engaged and community-based participatory research. Additionally, addressing the mental health challenges that undergraduate students face and investigating best -practices for supporting students in baccalaureate programs of study is a priority for me and my fellow social work faculty members. I am particularly invested in creating a BSW program here at Georgia's first Hispanic Serving institution that supports and serves our Hispanic and Latino/a students, preparing social workers to address the mental health, health, and socio-economic disparities in our community.

I believe it is the responsibility of social workers to work on behalf of social justice for all people, particularly for the most vulnerable among us. Social workers do not have the freedom to be oblivious; we must be engaged in the pursuit of human rights for all. I am committed to working with professionals and organizations to strengthen our community and create positive social change.

As the BSW Program Director, it is my honor to work alongside the BSW faculty in creating a rigorous and rewarding program of study for our students. I believe our students receive a BSW education that rivals any other program they might find. We are committed to engaging with our students to help them achieve their educational and personal goals. We are proud of our profession and enjoy welcoming our students to its ranks. I believe our graduates are some of the finest social workers in the profession, and they are practicing right here in our community. My hope is that we have taught them "to think, to perform, and to act ethically and with integrity."
